Tell the Pentagon: Stop wasting taxpayer dollars on fake patriotism
A report released last week by Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake found that the Department of Defense has doled out as much as $6.8 million in taxpayer money to professional sports teams. The reason? To conduct “displays of patriotism” as a recruiting tool.
72 of its 122 professional sports contracts contained “paid patriotism.” More than HALF of these contracts used taxpayer dollars to fund on-field color guard ceremonies, performances of the national anthem, ceremonial first pitches and puck drops, and more. The use of taxpayer dollars for these tributes is completely inappropriate.
We've don't often agree with McCain and Flake, both Republicans, but on this one, we share their outrage. It's fine and appropriate for sports teams to honor these troops. But the Pentagon shouldn’t be paying for it! It's not just a waste of money, it's frankly insulting to pretend to honor them – but to do it for the money.
