Tell Congress: Pass the "End Polluter Welfare Act" now!

With House and Senate negotiators locked in a fierce debate over how to cut the deficit, along comes an eminently sensible idea from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Keith Ellison: Stop using our tax dollars to subsidize pollution.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) today introduced legislation to eliminate tax loopholes and subsidies that support the oil, gas and coal industries. The End Polluter Welfare Act of 2013 would remove tax breaks, close loopholes, end taxpayer-funded fossil fuel research and prevent companies from escaping liability for spills or deducting cleanup costs. Under current law, these subsidies are expected to cost taxpayers more than $100 billion in the coming decade. (Source)

The five most profitable oil companies alone reaped more than one trillion dollars in profits during the past decade. It is absurd to continue providing massive subsidies to fossil fuel producers at a time of record profits – especially when we are making truly painful cuts elsewhere.

Stand with Senator Sanders and Representative Ellison.

Tell Congress: Pass the "End Polluter Welfare Act" now!
